How to review AI-assisted answers from a PDF against the cited pages

Use page citations, source-order checks and clear exceptions to turn a PDF question-and-answer session into a reviewable research note.

Ask a question that can be checked

Start with a precise question about the uploaded document: for example, what method the authors used, where a policy sets a deadline, or which pages support a stated finding. Broad prompts can be useful for orientation, but they make it harder to decide whether an answer is complete.

Keep the question tied to the document rather than treating the result as outside research. The answer is a fast route through the processed PDF pages; it is not independent verification of the document's claims, citations or conclusions.

Review checklist

  • Name the fact, claim or section you need
  • Ask for the supporting pages
  • Keep the original PDF open while reviewing

Read every cited page before relying on the answer

Use the page citations to return to the source and read the surrounding paragraph, table or footnote. A sentence can be technically present but limited by a qualifier, a sample condition or an earlier definition that a short answer does not repeat.

If an answer has no citation, treats an uncertain point as settled, or conflicts with the page, mark it for manual review. Do not repair it from memory: quote or note the relevant source passage in your working record.

Watch for incomplete document input

Long or complex PDFs can contain scanned pages, appendices, figures and layouts that need extra care. If the review desk warns that the input was truncated, treat the answer as limited to the processed pages and inspect the unprocessed material separately.

Tables, charts and references are especially easy to oversimplify. Check labels, units, dates and page headings rather than relying on a summary of a visual element alone.

Review checklist

  • Check for an input-truncation warning
  • Review figures and tables in the PDF
  • Record any pages not covered by the answer

Turn the result into a reviewable note

Save the question, answer, cited pages and reviewer conclusion together. Separate what the document says from your interpretation, and include unresolved points. This gives another reviewer a way to trace a decision without repeating the entire search.

The File Workshop can help organise questions around processed PDF pages. It does not establish the truth of a source, replace expert review or make a document suitable for a legal, clinical, financial or academic decision on its own.
